VHS, 30 min., 1982 Old timers exchange "tall tales" with an elementary class in Arkansas, and musician CeDell Davis plays slide-guitar blues to a high school class. Davis reminds the students of the roots of black music and its influences.
Before Us . . Beyond Us, the Spoken Word VHS, 30 min., ND Distinguished Tennessee author John Egerton (The Americanization of Dixie) shows us how to collect oral history and conduct interviews. For anyone interested in preserving folklore, this is an excellent short course by an acclaimed expert in the field.
Mountain People . . A Sense of Place VHS, 30 min., ND An inside look at Appalachia and essential elements of this mountain culture. Destroys many clichés and gives viewers a deeper appreciation of these people. Funded by the West Virginia Humanities Council.
VHS, 30 min., ND George West conducts a storytelling project with older adults in Big Flat, Arkansas. Senior citizens tell each other stories, some joyful, some painful, and most humorous. Some stories are based on historic facts and others are out-and-out tall tales.
